Ergo Dialed In Bobbin

I received my repair parts, and the bobbin is now pretty good! The repair kit came with new washers and a new end cap. Installing just the end cap was not particularly helpful, but the end cap and washers together made the bobbin operate much smoother! It’s still not perfect, as the adjustments are still a little finicky (there’s maybe 1/4 of a turn difference between a free falling bobbin and breaking thread), but the bobbin is for sure usable now. I’ll still probably prefer my Loon All-Purpose Ergo Bobbin especially for smaller flies, but the dialed in bobbin will be nice for larger flies when I want more tension.

Bought this because I love my standard Loon all purpose bobbin so much. Gotta say, I’m unimpressed. The tension is finicky to set, even with as many of the 8 plastic washers crammed in there as I can get, and the thread does not unspool smoothly. It’s always grabbing, which means the tension is always changing as you’re tying. Additionally, if you tie small flies, this bobbin is very large, which is mentioned nowhere in Loon’s advertising materials. I’ll give it a couple more chances to see if wear improves its performance.

I’ve had several different tools from Loon over the years and have had great results and been happy. Mot so with this bobbin. Tube is too long for my bobbin threader and no matter what combination of disks I use, I can’t get the tension right. It is too tight and when I loosen it enough that thread will feed out, it continues to loosen and eventually just slips and ends up on the floor with 4 feet of thread on the ground.
